Transfer RailMaster
Starting the Process

The very first thing to do is obtain a copy of all files necessary to complete the transfer. You may be faced by any one of the following scenarios... a simple transfer by choice, a corrupted system with access to the files you need, a corrupted system with no access to the files or a damaged hard drive with, similarly, no access to the relevant files for RailMaster.

For the latter scenarios above you will need to remove your hard drive from your computer and have access to recovery software or a docking station, or both, for example. The following will deal with the situation where files are readable and can be safely copied without the need for the latter software or docking stations mentioned above. Information on using that type of recovery is readily available on the Internet or you can ask myself via email or post to the forum.

The processes to follow and files you need to copy over to an external drive or memory stick/card are as follows:

Managing your Files

The files to copy are:

  • Resource.mdb
  • Groups.dat
  • *.pln
  • *.prg
The asterisks represent any filename that has the extensions of .pln or .prg. These are plan and program files you create. The Resource file contains all your locos while the Groups file contains your groups of locos you have set up. If you have the Pro Pack then a backup using that program will do the full set for you when pressing About and then selecting backup with its destination for saving your files. Make sure you tick the box "Backup sample plans and programs" if you have modified them in any way and you need them too. By default the files are stored in the following folders on your computer:
  • C:\Program Files\RailMaster
  • for 64 bit platforms and
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\RailMaster
  • on 32 bit platforms.

Deactivating RailMaster

By deactivating RailMaster you will NOT delete any files that are installed or created by yourself. The software merely drops back to a demo version running two locos, four points and signals (combined) and up to ten lines of programming per program created. RailMaster software is not transferrable to another user so when deactivating it there is a very good reason to note the details you entered when first activating the software. To deactivate the software press the About button and a popup window appears which will show all your current licenses that are active. Press the lock icon to deactivate and you are asked if you are sure you wish to do so. If you have purchased the optional Pro-Pack to extend RailMaster that Pro-Pack Unlock Code will also be deactivated at the same time. If you also have HandHeld licences then you must deactivate those separately AND FIRST before the main RailMaster program. When you are ready to reactivate on the other, or indeed the same, computer you will need to activate your main RailMaster key first followed by the Unlock Code for the Pro-Pack. You can then activate any Hand-Held licenses immediately after those. IMPORTANT: Always wait for deactivation confirmation before attempting to begin activating the software on the destination computer.

Reactivating RailMaster

Now you have your files saved or recovered and stored safely then you can begin to install RailMaster on the destination PC or laptop. Make sure you have the latest version of the software to hand, downloadable from links contained within this site for convenience under the "Installation" button. Do NOT use the CD that came with licence key as it is too old. The first two links are always the latest as they are direct links to official sites. OK... go ahead and install in the normal way your standard RailMaster version followed by the Pro-Pack if you have it. Click the About link to begin the activation process and activate all software you require.

If you have the Pro-Pack you can then simply restore all files you saved earlier automatically by simply pasting them into the same folders you copied them from earlier. If you edited the railmaster.ini file when installed on the old setup then do the same alterations now or see the Comms Issues section of the Tips and Tricks page on this site to see what is to be added to the file, if anything.

That should complete the process so if anything goes wrong you may have inadvertently missed something (check the installation and set up help within this site to guide you along). If you are still stuck then proceed to the forum and seek help there or ask myself via the link within the site.
